The Filament Storage Rack

The best / worse thing about being a maker is being able to build the stuff you need to perfectly fit the space you have. (aka buying off the shelf is not an option.)

And having 3d printing as a hobby comes with its own issues - namely, all the filament and the issue of where to store it!?

Yes, I know... filament storage systems are hardly novel but nevertheless I built one and somehow ended up with something truly, at least in my opinion... beautiful. The brushed metal against the matte black is pretty striking - I think, at least.

So behold - my homemade homebuilt prefab filament rack that stores 42 full size filaments in humidity-defying tubs.

The only downside is I still have about the same again that could easily fill another one! Maybe that's for v2.

ANYWAY. If you're here because you want to print your own, I got you. Here's what you need.

Caution

You'll need to be reasonably flexible if you actually want to make this. The height and width are entirely adjustable - just size your hardware to fit whatever space you have. You'll need to decide if you're using the tubs and carriers - or not - and then size accordingly. You can't in this version adjust the depth (i.e. front to back) as the strength of the rack is based on snapping the uprights together.

Hardware

I got these from B&Q but they're actually from Rothley:

• 32mm generic rail
• 19mm Horizontal Bar
• Tubs
• Tubs 2

You'll need to cut them to size based on your requirements. Wrap the ends in blue tape to get a nice finish. You'll probably want to slighty chamfer them as well.

Joinery

The 3mf files are attached. You need:
- 8 corner pieces
- 2x as many depth spacers as you have levels.
- As many risers as you then need to separate them based on your overall height
- Tub carriers if needed

I printed the corner brackets in PLA CF for strength, everything else is normal PLA.

This is my first time publishing plans for a project and I appreciate they're a little sparse.
