3MF is the format modern slicers save to. Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer and PrusaSlicer all produce it, and it carries far more than a mesh: materials, colours, build-plate placement and print metadata all travel inside the file. macOS knows none of this. Every .3mf in your downloads folder is a blank page icon, indistinguishable from the one next to it.

3MF Viewer fixes that. Thumbnails render the actual model in the file, so a folder of prints becomes recognisable at a glance. Press Space and you get an interactive preview you can rotate, zoom and pan without launching anything. Double-click and the full viewer opens with flat and smooth shading.

Underneath, a 3MF file is an OPC package: a ZIP container holding XML mesh data. This app reads it with a hand-written parser, including the production extension that slicers use for multi-object plates, and renders multi-colour models using base materials and colour groups. There is no third-party 3D engine involved and nothing is uploaded anywhere. Everything happens on your Mac.

Requirements

Universal binary, so it runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

Installation

Download the file, unzip it, and copy it into your Applications folder. Open it once and it registers the Quick Look handler itself. Instructions are included with the download.

Apps downloaded here are signed by Apple, so you shouldn't see any Gatekeeper warnings.

What you may do: install and use the software, at no cost, on any Mac you own or control, for personal or business purposes.
