• See .vox voxel models (the format used by MagicaVoxel and friends) straight from Finder

MagicaVoxel is where a great deal of indie game art and voxel modelling starts, and .vox is its native format. On macOS those files are invisible: a folder of models looks like a folder of identical blank icons, which is precisely the wrong outcome for a format whose entire point is visual iteration.

Voxel Viewer renders them. Thumbnails show the actual model with its palette colours intact. Quick Look gives you an interactive preview from the Space bar. Multi-model scenes render as scenes, with the transforms applied, rather than as a heap of unpositioned parts.

The parser is hand-written against the published .vox chunk specification, covering both the 150 and 200 versions of the format, the 256-colour palette chunk, and the scene graph nodes that position models in a larger composition.

Requirements

Universal binary, so it runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

Installation

Download the file, unzip it, and copy it into your Applications folder. Open it once and it registers the Quick Look handler itself. Instructions are included with the download.

Apps downloaded here are signed by Apple, so you shouldn't see any Gatekeeper warnings.

What you may do: install and use the software, at no cost, on any Mac you own or control, for personal or business purposes.
